St. George Agricole Rum
As my previous post mentioned, this weekend is the final stretch of the 2016 Barbados Crop Over season. I thought I would stick with Mount Gay Rum but seeing that I wasn’t on rushed time, I decided to sample a couple other rums. St. George Agricole Rum was one of those as the bottle was pretty and I was intrigued as they also make an absinthe; absinthe intrigues me but only on occasions where I can find a brave soul/victim to agree to a glass. Agricole rum simply put is the style of rum which uses sugar cane juice as opposed to molasses.

This weekend is the final leg into Barbados’ Crop Over festival. Differently from Trinidad’s Carnival which is a pre-Lenten celebration, Crop Over holds its roots in history where slaves would celebrate the end of working the sugar cane fields as the “crop was over.”

Back in February I was rushing through Grantley Adams Airport in Barbados, hoping that the unusual hour-long wait in immigration and security wouldn’t prevent me from getting my duty-free rum. I wasn’t worried about missing my flight because who wouldn’t like another day in beautiful Barbados?
Koloa Rum & an Old Fashioned
I recently had lunch at the Ritz-Carlton’s Burlock Coast, a casual dining restaurant on Fort Lauderdale Beach. I met Tracy, a nice bartender who was more than happy to talk about the various rums that Burlock Coast not only offers, but sells in their shop. The shop itself is a great idea, especially for hotel guests, but being able to sample rums and head over to the shop to purchase is convenient.
Stolen Rum
No, I’m not reporting about a robbery although trust me, if someone stole my rum, I would definitely write a post about it. Last week, Bar Stache 1920’s Drinking Den featured Stolen Rum as part of their Summer of Rum Vinyl Series. Stache is where Mount Gay Rum held their rum tasting and I felt welcome enough that I wanted to see what else they had to offer.

I have tried blogging before and much like my career choices, I lose interest and wonder why I can’t be passionate about something; anything! I will take up a hobby only to forget about it or tell myself, maybe when I have time. My hobbies are left to die because I would much rather run off to a rum tasting, a happy hour, or a party (where rum flows in abundance).
Mount Gay Black Barrel
I thought my first post about rum be about the brand that made me love rum: Mount Gay. It is the world’s oldest rum and established on February 20, 1703. Named after Sir John Gay Alleyne, a British descendant that also happened to part of Barbados’ parliament and was a financier of education, Mount Gay Rum has a fascinating history. I highly recommend the rum tour at the Mount Gay Visitor’s Center in Barbados. I’ll touch more on Mount Gay over time as they have a number of products (ie. Mauby, XO, 1703, Silver, Eclipse, and a small batch collector’s series).
